Comments Following an Interview with the OHSU Fertility Consultants Clinic Counselor:

Donor #9845 is a 27-year-old single (divorced) man who decided to become a donor because he has family members who have infertility and he has great empathy for them. One of his siblings has adopted four children. Donor is from a family of 7 children, and he is the middle child (the fourth born). All of his siblings work in the business field except the youngest who is still in high school. Donor's father is an attorney, and his mother is a small business owner.

Donor #9845 is an elementary school teacher and has a master's degree. He loves teaching so much that he gets to work early and volunteers to teach summer school. He states that it doesn't ever feel like working. He even brings his dog to his classroom for the children to enjoy and learn about. He has a BA in Social Science.

Donor has no history of mental illness in his family of origin. He is a non-smoker and a very light social drinker, having an alcohol beverage only 2-3 times per year at special occasions, like weddings. He is a homeowner and loves to garden. He also likes outdoor pursuits such as kayaking, mountain biking, snow skiing, and road trips for travel. He also loves to read, do puzzles, go to movies and play board games. His own counseling history was brief and about his marriage issues before divorce.

Donor describes his personality as flexible, easygoing, carefree and humorous. He appears to be a very friendly, upbeat, easy-to-talk-to guy who has a very warm, genuine, beautiful smile that would light up a room. He also seems like the kind of person that would be fun as a friend because he enjoys so many activities and has a happiness that radiates from his personality.

Summary of the Taylor-Johnson Temperament Analysis:

As mentioned previously, the Taylor-Johnson Temperament Analysis is designed to measure nine distinct personality traits and their opposites, which influence a person's personal, social, family, scholastic and vocational adjustment. (It is not intended as a measurement of mental or emotional disorders.)

Donor #9845 took the Taylor-Johnson Temperament Analysis profile. He scored in the Excellent range in five out of nine measurements.

The first area where he scored in the Excellent range is about being Light-Hearted as opposed to Depressed.

This measures a person's ability to be hopeful and optimistic about the future and his unlikelihood to dwell in past misfortunes or losses. He most likely is a happy, cheerful and optimistic person and has a positive disposition. (This certainly seemed the case during the individual interview.)

The second Excellent score was in the field of Active-Social as opposed to Quiet. This donor scored almost off the chart in this area, which isn't surprising since he is a healthy, young adult male with many and varied interests. This measurement indicates a person that is enthusiastic and socially involved. He has a lot of vitality for life and finds enjoyment in many activities and events. This also may indicate a person who has social involvement with community, club or group activities. He is the type of person that makes new friends and has an interest in others, and a high score indicates a liking for people and a need for companionship and group participation.

The third score in the Excellent range was for Expressive-Responsive as opposed to Inhibited. This type of personality is someone who is affectionate, demonstrative, and can be very spontaneous. (Inhibited is characterized by a person being unresponsive or repressed.) This measures the ability to be friendly, talkative, and warm-hearted and outgoing. He may be the kind of person that can be affectionate without embarrassment or discomfort. This also measures the ability to respond to others' affectionate feelings and warmth of expression. This indicates the ability to have and maintain satisfying interpersonal relationships with others.

The fourth Excellent score for this donor was in the area of Sympathetic versus Indifferent. This is a measurement of compassion, understanding, kindness and sensitivity. A person that's sympathetic has qualities that include an awareness and regard for others' thoughts and feelings and a concern for the welfare of others, including children, the elderly and/or animals. There often is a desire to be of service to others in times of need.

Finally, this donor also scored in the Excellent range in the measurement of Tolerant versus Hostile. A tolerant person is someone who is accepting, patient, thoughtful and humane. (Hostile people tend to be very critical, thoughtless, and overtly inconsiderate.) A person who has an Excellent score in this area would show respect for others and possibly freedom from racial or religious prejudice. They would not have a defensive attitude, and they would be accepting of others' opinions even if those opinions may differ from their own.

The donor scored in the Acceptable range for three other measurements, which include Composed (versus Nervous), Subjective (versus Objective), and Dominant (versus Submissive).

KID PAGE

1. In general, please describe your childhood.

Most of my early childhood was spent in California and Arizona. My parents didn't move around a lot. I remember my home in Arizona was on a golf course in one of the major cities. My younger sister and I use to sneak out and play in the bunker on hole #7. My favorite house was in the Los Angeles area. I also lived on top of a large hill in the San Rafael area. My grandfather built the house; a large three-story home. I loved to skateboard down one of my favorite roads! I moved to Oregon in high school. My six siblings and I called this home "The Castle." It was anything but a castle, but the large entertainment room favored great family memories, and the priceless views of Mt. Hood from every bedroom jump-started my love for the outdoors.

2. Were there any family members other than your parents and siblings with whom you regularly had contact?

My grandmother lived with me as I grew up. She would take my younger sister and me to the mall. She'd always get me something nice: a toy or a game. I especially remember going out to eat with her. We always went to a specific cafeteria in the city where we lived near Los Angeles. It was a must to get green jello...what a treat. J

3. As a child, what was/were your favorite: Please include a reason, or why, if you can.

Food(s)? In-N-Out Burger. Because my mom had to drive us there. I enjoyed the trip!

Color(s)? Blue. The sky, my eyes, most of my crayons...all blue!

Toy(s)? GI Joes! I couldn't get enough of action figures.

Indoor game(s)? Hide and go seek. Big homes and lots of places to hide.

Outdoor game(s)? SOCCER! I love to run, and I continue to play as an adult.

Book(s)? Anything from Shel Silverstein. Because of the humor.

Sport(s)? Baseball and soccer. I love numbers and stats (baseball).

Other activity(s)? I loved playing CandyLand and Uno.

4. What is your earliest memory?

Playing in the front yard while it was being irrigated. I was three years old, and I remember that the water felt so deep. The temperature was regularly in the 100s. I remember waiting for the water to arrive. When it began to flood into the yard, my brothers and sisters and I would dive and play in the water until the sun went down or the water soaked into the ground. J

5. What did you do during the summers?

Travel! My occupation allows me the opportunity to see many places. Over the past five summers I have traveled to: Spain, Morocco, France, Great Britain, Chicago, Carmel, Texas. Drove across the country (USA), DC, et cetera. I also work on my house. J

6. Are there any "new" technologies you remember becoming available during your childhood which now are commonplace in our society, or which have now been replaced by a newer technology?

Atari 64 was the beginning of all the new video games. We could play PacMan and Space Invaders.

Cable TV: when I was little, I remember getting HBO for the first time. Having a movie channel was a big deal. Some thought it was the end of movie theaters.

7. Did you enjoy school as a child? Do you have any memories of teachers that influenced you, or that you especially liked (or disliked)?

I don't remember much of elementary. Middle school and high school are another story. Many of my memories are of friendships I built and have kept while playing baseball, football and tennis during high school.

8. Did you have chores or tasks that you were regularly expected to do?

My job was, and still is, to vacuum. I enjoy it especially since the technology in vacuums has become so much better.

9. Any other recollections of importance that come to mind?
