1. In general, please describe your childhood.
I had a great childhood. I lived with my parents in Indonesia (Borneo) for the first two years of my life. Moved two times when we got back to the states (each move was a necessary change to accommodate the addition of another sibling). I have two younger sisters with whom I get along with very well. That’s not to say that our relationship was without sibling rivalry in our youth.
2. Were there any family members other than your parents and siblings with whom you regularly had contact?
I would regularly see many family members. I’ll tell a story that is still brought up at family reunions. I would
spend a lot of time with my maternal grandmother. I also saw my maternal uncles and cousins on a frequent
basis; however, until I was five, I had never been to a family event when both my grandmother and my uncles
were present. My grandmother took me fishing when I was five, and while we were waiting at the docks for
one more person to arrive, I spotted my uncle (my grandmother’s son). This was a strange coincidence, and I
waved. When he came over, I was shocked that he hugged my grandmother, and I said, “You two know each
other?” I was even more confused when they both started laughing.
3. As a child, what was/were your favorite:
Food(s)? Macaroni and cheese.
Color(s)? Green.
Toy(s)? Big Wheels.
Indoor game(s)? Monopoly. Played it with my best friend.
Outdoor game(s)? Capture the Flag.
Book(s)? The Polar Express. Always comforted me before bed.
Sport(s)? Soccer.
Other activity(s)? Water polo in high school.
4. What is your earliest memory?
Going to see my dad at his office in Borneo.
5. What did you do during the summers?
Usually went to athletic camps for several weeks. I had several volunteer jobs also. One summer I worked on a farm for three months…never again.
6. Are there any Anew@ technologies you remember becoming available during your childhood which now are commonplace in our society, or which have now been replaced by a newer technology?
The budding technology when I was a child was computers.
7. Did you enjoy school as a child? Do you have any memories of teachers that influenced you, or that you especially liked (or disliked)?
I loved school as a child. I always preferred science and math classes. My fourth grade teacher was the best teacher I’ve ever had, and arguably the best teacher in the world. She’s one of those people that are so motivating because they truly want to see one excel.
8. Did you have chores or tasks that you were regularly expected to do?
The standard chores: cleaning my room and parts of the house, garbage and recycling, walking the dog, helping with the dishes, etc.
9. Any other recollections of importance that come to mind?
